In this role, you will have global accountability for R&D, Innovation and Application Development for functional ingredients like Phosphates, anti-corrosion Pigments, Dispersants.  Main application areas are in paints and coatings, construction chemicals, personal care, water treatment, pharma (Advanced Additives/AA).

  • Establish world class highly functioning team, highly networked & best in class on technical knowledge able to interface with customers on co-development
  • Responsible for the implementation and execution of the RD&I plan for the Advanced Additives Business  
    • Refine and develop the innovation strategy together with the business, marketing functions of BU AA
    • Working together with the Business, Portfolio Management team develop and manage (own) technology roadmap
    • Planning and implementing a long-term strategy for BU AA
  • Key member of PS R&D management team
  • Establish RD AA annual budget for 2022 and 5-year Long Range Plan (LRP). Identify gaps, challenges & opportunities, build appropriate budgeting needs  
  • Coordination of R&D activities of all sites and regional R&D teams
  • Ensuring all R&D AA staff have proper tools, training and / or development necessary to perform their work efficiently and properly
  • Responsible for delivering the new product sales according to the LRP of the BU AA, supported by strong portfolio management
  • Manage the regulatory interface for AA products
  • End to end talent management, including succession planning to create a high performing R&D organization

What skills and experience do I need to be successful in this role?

  • 10+ years' experience in managing application driven R&D for specialty businesses preferably for Paints & Coatings or Construction chemicals
  • Advanced degree in relevant field: Chemistry or Engineering
  • Understanding of core functionalities relevant for Phosphates (Dispersion, Anti-Corrosion, Acidulation)
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements for Industrial Products
  • Recent R&D experience creating/developing industrial products, Preference for experience in a value-added global Paints & Coatings company
  • Deep understanding of portfolio management, and a successful track record of commercialization of innovation
  • Experience in working on a global basis, with decentralized direct reports & teams as well as a matrix corporate enabling functions
  • Experience in delivering products and services incorporating in a business-to-business context
  • Execution-focused with a sense of urgency, solutions oriented and resourcefulness, with a focus on relevance to customers across multiple end user segments
  • Open innovation mindset, cultivating (internal-external) collaborative R&D
  • Highly motivated, committed & self-managing professional
