As the North American Senior Manager of Research and Development, you will manage the development of new technologies and product offerings for Specialty Agriculture and Ornamental Horticulture market channels utilizing your scientific knowledge, personal creativity, and fertilizer industry expertise. This position leads a team of people that work on complex, multi-year projects that involve cross functional teams and sizeable budgets. 

 

This position is at North Charleston reporting to the R&D Director.

  • Lead research department activities to achieve Growing Solutions business objectives to grow and maintain revenue and profit.
  • Work with internal and external partners to bring forth innovative and transformative business and product ideas. Collaborate with cross functional departments to vet ideas for technical and financial feasibility.
  • Make recommendations to senior leadership team on resource allocations and project selections. 
  • Champion product development projects through RD&I Stage and Gate system; build project plans and budgets.
  • Establish 5-year strategic plan that improve research work processes and expand R&D capabilities into new areas. Execute necessary capital investment activity.
  • Establish individual developmental plans for staff and build succession plan.  Mentor and develop junior research scientists. 

 

 

What skills and experience do I need to be successful in this role?

 

  • Minimum educational requirement is a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry (or other relevant scientific field) with at least 10 years’ experience in product or process development. 
  • At least 5 years’ experience in prior manager role with budgetary and staffing responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to achieve results through management of others.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to present compelling case for ideas and projects to senior leadership.
  • Very strong analytical / scientific skills with ability to translate information for non-technical people.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel will be required. Frequency of travel is driven by project and/or business needs. 
  • Physical requirements of the job are those common to working in a laboratory, pilot production facility and in field / greenhouse research plots. Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment as required.

 

What will set me apart:

 

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (or other relevant scientific field).
  • Prior experience with fertilizer coating (polymer) chemistries and analytical instruments and methods of polymer science.
  • Managerial or leadership role in function outside of R&D.
  • Prior experience with stage and gate process and procedures, project portfolio management and product idea generation.
  • Proven industry knowledge demonstrated through Patents. Publications, and/or leadership positions in industry organizations.
  • Knowledge of global fertilizer markets and trends in agriculture and horticulture.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements in fertilizer industry.
     

Compensation at ICL: If you are hired at ICL, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience. We also offer a generous benefits package (more information on benefits listed below).
 

Salary Range: $103,0000-$141,000
 

Annual Bonus Target:16%, subject to plan provisions.
