As the Engineering Technologist, you will join our innovative and learning-oriented environment at ICL-Lawrence. The successful candidate will be an integral part of supporting collaborative engineering, maintenance, and manufacturing teams by developing, designing, and drafting detailed plans for plant systems, equipment, and infrastructure.
This position combines technical and applied design expertise with a strong understanding of engineering processes to help ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of the plant. The position creates and maintains technical drawings, 2D/3D models, schematics, and process diagrams, while working within the multi-disciplinary and highly synergistic and supportive team environment to ensure design accuracy, functionality, effectiveness, and compliance with industry and plant standards.

Engineering/Project Design Support
- Collaborate with process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation/controls engineers to support design projects and improvements as it relates to new plant systems, upgrades, and modifications.
- Assist in the preparation of design proposals, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Participate in project team discussions and plant walkthroughs to understand project requirements and help identify potential design and layout challenges.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to existing systems to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve safety and sustainability.
- Contribute to the development of process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), electrical layouts, and mechanical schematics.
- Collaborate with engineers to design systems and components that optimize plant operations and address technical challenges.
- Provide technical and field support during the construction, commissioning, and operational phases of plant projects.
Drafting Support:
- Create and modify engineering drawings for plant processes, equipment layouts, PFDs, P&IDs, and other related documents based on initial design concepts and specifications provided by the engineering team.
- Use CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, etc.) to develop detailed technical drawings that comply with industry and plant standards.
- Develop 2D/3D models and perform drawing revisions for ongoing projects.
Documentation and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for all designs, including revision tracking and change management.
- Ensure all drawings and designs comply with relevant safety codes, industry regulations, and plant standards.
- Assist in preparing technical reports, manuals, and procedures to support project execution and operations.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, quality, ESH, and procurement, to ensure design solutions meet the plant’s needs.
- Participate in design reviews and project meetings to provide input on feasibility, safety, and technical aspects of design solutions.
- Communicate effectively with engineers, maintenance, operations, contractors, and vendors to help ensure accurate design execution and procurement of materials and equipment.
Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving:
- Assist in troubleshooting design and operational issues, providing timely solutions to prevent production disruptions.
- Review existing systems and recommend upgrades or modifications to improve performance, reliability, safety, and sustainability.
- Support the operations and maintenance teams by providing technical drawings and documentation for troubleshooting and repairs.
Continuous Improvement, Learning, and Innovation:
- Stay current on advancements in engineering design and technology, CAD software, industry best practices, and new innovations.
- Participate in training sessions, workshops, and professional development opportunities to enhance technical skills and knowledge.
- Contribute to the improvement of design standards, processes, documentation, and tools used within the engineering department.
What skills and experience do I need to be successful in this role?
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical) or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in engineering design, drafting, and technical support within a chemical or industrial plant environment preferred.
- Proven experience in creating detailed engineering drawings using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar) for 2D design.
- Experience with 3D modeling and other advanced design tools is advantageous.
- Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and chemical systems as they relate to plant operations and equipment.
Skills & Competencies:
- Proficiency in design and drafting software (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, etc.), including the creation of P&IDs, PFDs, and mechanical/electrical layouts.
- Knowledge of chemical layout and design related to process flows, piping, instrumentation, and control systems preferred.
- Understanding of safety standards, codes, and regulations in the chemical and industrial sectors.
- Ability to interpret and apply engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Attention to detail, with a focus on accuracy and quality in design work.
- Strong communication skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Ability to work both in an office and plant environment, with routine visits in the plant for inspections, design/layout, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to work in a chemical plant environment, including navigating various work areas, some of which may involve safe exposure to chemicals and machinery.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to plant safety protocols.
- Ability to lift small loads as required for project support.
- Must adhere to all plant health and safety protocols.
Compensation at ICL: If you are hired at ICL, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience. We also offer a generous benefits package (more information on benefits listed below).
Salary Range: $56,000 - $82,000
Annual Bonus Target: 5%, subject to plan provisions.
