Fabricator – Welder (Production)

 

Reports to: Mechanical Foreman (Production)
Accountable to: Mechanical Foreman (Production) / Mechanical Operations Engineer (Mining)

 

 

The Role


The Fabricator–Welder works as part of the Underground Mechanical Team to ensure all machinery and equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently. The role involves carrying out maintenance inspections, executing remedial work, and responding to operational requirements. The post-holder must be prepared to work any shift pattern required for the position and act as a proactive, flexible member of the engineering team.

  • Production Department
  • Underground Foremen
  • Underground Operation Engineers

 

 

The Responsibilities

 

Safety

  • Follow all relevant safety rules and procedures.
  • Attend safety briefings as requested.
  • Ensure appropriate risk assessments and method statements are in place and followed.
  • Sign onto Permits to Work / Clearance to Work when required.
  • Carry out mechanical isolations as per procedure.
  • Understand and comply with emergency procedures.

 

Planning

  • Review information from previous reports and verbal communication.
  • Attend pre-shift task briefings and confirm availability for deployment.
  • Plan, risk assess, and execute workload as needed.

 

Decision Making & Problem Solving

  • Make informed decisions regarding hazard identification and risk management.
  • Prioritise tasks in consultation with the supervisor.
  • Use experience and knowledge to manage issues and incidents effectively.

 

Operational Tasks

  • Carry out remedial and preventative maintenance according to priority.
  • Provide effective feedback to team members and Foremen.
  • Suggest improvements related to equipment safety, performance, tooling, design, and working practices.
  • Work flexibly and collaboratively within the team.
  • Demonstrate self‑motivation, discipline, and interest in personal development.

 

Communication

  • Produce clear, concise reports on work completed and work required.
  • Communicate effectively with Foremen on all activities.
  • Liaise with engineering staff, operational teams, and contractors on joint activities.
  • Engage with Foremen to understand daily mechanical requirements.

 

Information Management

  • Interpret and act upon verbal/written information, technical manuals, risk assessments, method statements, and previous reports.
  • Use standard IT packages to support work.

 

Financial Management

  • No direct financial management responsibilities.

 

General Expectations

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding ICL people, operations, and projects.
  • Participate in regular review of duties and objectives.
  • Work to required standards and deliver an acceptable level of service.

 

The Requirements

 

Experience & Knowledge

  • Time-served tradesperson with experience in welding and fabricating heavy equipment in a processing plant, mine, or similar heavy industrial environment.
  • Understanding of process and distribution engineering.
  • Familiarity with modern welding and fabrication techniques (advantageous).

 

Qualifications

  • Level 2 Skills for Life (Numeracy, Literacy, ITQ) or equivalent GCSEs/higher.
  • Time-served apprenticeship in welding, fabrication, or plating.
  • Advanced welding qualifications (desirable).
  • Risk Assessment training.
  • IOSH Working Safely.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Willingness to obtain any required qualifications within a reasonable timeframe.
